Manchester City suffered defeat again in the Premier League on Saturday evening. Music to Liverpool’s ears.
For the first time in his managerial career Pep Guardiola has lost five consecutive matches, and he did it in style with a 4-0 loss at home to Tottenham Hotspur.
The result is one that City fans will want to forget quickly, but it could play perfectly into Liverpool’s hands.
The Reds could move to eight points clear of Manchester City with a win over Southampton on Sunday, and then their next Premier League game comes against Guardiola’s side at Anfield.
City fans will be scratching their heads at their sides bizarre form, but Guardiola was once again full of excuses at full-time.
The City boss, who has undoubtedly been one of the best managers in world football over the last decade, has been making excuses for his side’s awful form.
“We cannot handle the duels like we usually do and now we struggle a bit," Guardiola told Sky Sports after the final whistle. "When you are in the situation we are in it is a bit tougher."
"The balance is not in the right moment, but it happened so?"
"Of course Rodri is important but we knew it for many many months, so it's not that. John [Stones] can play just 45 minutes, Nathan [Ake] came back ... Jack [Grealish] has been injured many times, Kevin [De Bruyne] for two months then five months, so there are a lot of things."
City have one of the best squads in the Premier League, and they spent a fortune to put it together, so injuries can’t really be an excuse for them.
Tottenham were also missing a number of key players, fielding a make-shift back line, and they held City at bay.
The absence of Rodri is a big one but surely one player being injured can’t cause five losses on the bounce. Are City a one-man team?
The Reds have been missing some key players for much of this season, with the likes of Alisson and Harvey Elliott unavailable for a long spell, but Liverpool have managed.
Slot will no doubt have been watching his rival tonight and will be pleased with what he saw and after tonight Liverpool supporters will surely be very excited for City’s visit to Anfield.
