Alexis Mac Allister has been a crucial aspect of Liverpool’s brilliant start to the season.

Moved into a more advanced role on the inside-left, Mac Allister’s increased aggression, ability to win duels and advance the ball means that new head coach Arne Slot’s pressing system is executed brilliantly.

And the midfielder has also been integral for his World Cup and Copa America-winning Argentina side. Mac Allister’s presence there allows their dynamic attacking players a freedom similar to what we see from Salah and co. at Anfield.

It’s not too much of a coincidence, then, that their failure to win either of their last two games has coincided without Mac Allister’s presence in the team over the full 90.

The last time Argentina went two games without a win was the summer of 2021. Mac Allister’s full breakthrough came nine months later.

They have only failed to win five times since Mac Allister became a mainstay in the side, and he didn’t play the full 90 in any of them.

Is Mac Allister injured?

Alarmingly for Liverpool, Mac Allister was substituted off at half-time in their last game, a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace. Injury fears followed this, with Mac Allister facing a ‘muscle overload’ going into the last international break.

And fears worsened when Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni announced that Mac Allister has been unable to train with the squad ahead of their most recent game against Venezuela. The Liverpool man made the bench but did not see any action in Maturín.

TyC Sports are reporting that Mac Allister responded well to the first training session after the Venezuela game, however, and is in line to return to the side as they welcome Bolivia to Buenos Aires on Tuesday.

This will be incredibly welcome news on Merseyside, as Mac Allister already feels like an essential aspect of Arne Slot’s table toppers. With a seismic run of games coming up, including against Arsenal, Chelsea, and Aston Villa, Liverpool will need Mac Allister if they are serious about contending for the title this year.

Argentina sit top of the group and play sixth-placed Bolivia in a World Cup qualifier on Tuesday night (1am Wednesday BST).
