Darwin Núñez’s Liverpool career has never quite taken off the way the club hoped when they splashed £85 million on him in 2022. The Uruguayan forward, full of raw talent and undeniable energy, has often flattered to deceive. Now, with fresh uncertainty over his role under Arne Slot, reports suggest Liverpool are willing to listen to offers.
According to Chronicle Live, Newcastle United are one of the clubs who have been approached regarding a potential move for Núñez. The Magpies had previously scouted him before their Saudi-led takeover and could reignite their interest, especially if Callum Wilson departs. While rumours of a swap deal involving Alexander Isak have been dismissed, a straight-cash transfer worth around £60 million remains on the table.

Núñez’s inconsistency in front of goal has been a persistent frustration. While he has delivered flashes of brilliance, his wastefulness in key moments has cost Liverpool crucial points. His recent high-profile miss against Aston Villa seemed to be the final straw, drawing public criticism from Arne Slot.
Slot made his stance clear, stating:
“I can’t accept if a player doesn’t give everything.”
“That is clear. I can accept it once, but twice was a bit too much. That’s why I addressed it.”
His words underline a growing sentiment at Anfield—patience is running thin. Núñez has always worked hard, a trait that endeared him to fans, but his inability to consistently convert chances has left many questioning his long-term future.
Newcastle’s interest raises an intriguing question: is Núñez worth the gamble? With their Champions League ambitions, Eddie Howe’s side needs a reliable goal-scorer. His physicality, pace, and relentless pressing could fit Newcastle’s high-energy approach, but his finishing remains a major concern.
Liverpool, meanwhile, are undergoing a squad refresh. With Núñez’s market value still relatively high, this summer could be the club’s best chance to recoup a significant fee and reinvest in attacking options more suited to Slot’s system.
Concerned Liverpool Fan Perspective
Liverpool supporters will be torn on Núñez. On one hand, his passion and tireless work rate have made him a cult hero. His raw ability is undeniable, and when he’s on form, he is a nightmare for defenders. But consistency has been his Achilles’ heel.
Slot’s comments were telling. While Jürgen Klopp often defended his players, Slot has already shown he will demand more accountability. If he doesn’t believe Núñez can deliver consistently, then selling him might be the right call.
Newcastle’s potential move, however, raises concerns. If Núñez thrives elsewhere, especially at a rival club, Liverpool fans may be left wondering whether they gave up too soon. The risk is clear—selling him now could be a decision the Reds regret in a year’s time.
