Slot gets Anfield era off to a win over Brentford

Scorers: Díaz 13′, Salah 70′

Liverpool survived a couple of scares to deliver a controlled 2-0 win over Brentford at Anfield.

Arne Slot’s side took the lead early after a stunning counter-attack following a Brentford corner, Mohamed Salah winning the ball back and passing to Diogo Jota, who made the run and intelligently slipped in Díaz who smashed home a thumping finish.

Another fast break saw Díaz slip in Andy Robertson, who saw his shot from a tight angle well saved by Brentford stopper Mark Flekken.

Into the second half and Robertson had a second big chance to add to the scoreline from a rebound off a Jota overhead kick, but Flekken denied him once again.

Yet Brentford were gaining in confidence and a ball to the back post from Mathias Jensen was headed towards goal by Nathan Collins and forced an excellent point-blank stop from Alisson.

Collins was then called into action at the other end, as he stepped up to take two successive blocks, one from Salah and the other from Jota.

Dominik Szoboszlai then hit the outside of the post directly from a corner as Liverpool turned up the heat on the visitors.

Díaz then unleashed another powerful shot from the centre of the box, and Flekken got down quickly to pull off a top-draw save to keep the Colombian out.

But Brentford could do nothing about the second goal from Salah, as Szoboszlai won the ball back well, and two quick passes from Alexis MacAllister and Díaz played in the Egyptian, who beat the offside trap and bent a left-footed shot past Flekken.

Arne Slot is now the first Liverpool manager to win each of his first two Premier League games in charge of the club.

VAR denies Bournemouth dramatic late winner over Newcastle

Scorers: Tavernier 37′ ; Gordon 76′

Bournemouth were denied a late winner thanks to VAR as their match with Newcastle ended in a 1-1 draw.

After a cagey opening few minutes, it was Bournemouth who first went close to taking the lead as Evanilson unleashed a shot from a tight angle only for Nick Pope to be equal to it with an excellent save.

Bournemouth then rattled the crossbar with a beauty of a curling shot from Antoine Semenyo.

The home side was ahead when sloppy piece of possession from Joelinton allowed Semenyo to steal the ball, and then deliver a perfect cross into Marcus Tavernier, who tapped home from a central position.

It had been a quiet performance from Anthony Gordon, but when a delicious cross came in from Harvey Barnes on the left-hand side, it was the England international who was able to slide in for the finish.

Both sides were pushing for the winner, but it was the home side that had the ball in the back of the net in stoppage time from a Dango Ouattara header, but the goal was ruled out for a handball.

Chelsea demolish Wolves in eight-goal thriller

Scorers: Jackson 2′, Palmer 45′, Madueke 49′,58, 63′, Félix 80′; Cunha 27′, Larsen 45+6

A rampant second-half performance from Chelsea saw Enzo Maresca’s side beat Wolves by a 6-2 scoreline.

The Blues got off to a flying start as a short corner was whipped in by Cole Palmer and allowed Nicolas Jackson to head home unmarked at the back post.

Wolves hit back though, and Yerson Mosquera also did well with a header from a corner the middle of the box, but he clipped the outside of the post with his effort.

In this all-action showdown, Wolves soon had the ball in the back of the net, but Matheus Cunha’s effort was ruled out for an offside in the build-up from Strand Larsen.

That shot was clearly a warning sign, as Cunha soon had the ball in the net for real.

Some fantastic work from Rayan Aït-Nouri capitalised on a slip from Moises Caicedo in midfield, and managed to pick out an unmarked Cunha, who delivered a curling effort into the back of the net.

Cunha was causing Chelsea allsorts of problems, and nearly scored again when some excellent work from Mario Lemina allowed Matt Doherty to cross, only for the Brazilian to have his shot deflected by Levi Colwill onto the bar.

Just as Chelsea were looking frustrated, up stepped Palmer with the inevitable moment of magic, lobbing José Sá with a one-touch finish that looked to have sent his side in ahead at half-time.

But Wolves just wouldn’t lie down, and equalised once again in the dying seconds of the first half as a set piece caught Chelsea napping and allowed Larsen to deliver his debut goal for the club from close range.

This thrilling game had more twists and turns to come as Chelsea took the lead just four minutes into the second half  to re-gain the lead thanks to Noni Madueke.

Booed constantly by the Wolves fans for a since deleted social media post, Madueke then netted two more quick-fire goals to deliver a 17-minute hat-trick, with all three assisted by Palmer.

On his second debut for Chelsea, João Félix made it six, his powerful finish from inside the box assisted superbly by former Wolves man Pedro Neto.

Wolves had put up a fantastic fight in the first half, but in the end Chelsea were just too strong in the second.

The next Premier League fixture after today’s games is on Sunday August 31st, when Arsenal host Brighton.
