Barcelona’s midfield is stacked with talent, so much so that it is simply impossible for the manager to guarantee every player minutes.

Pedri, Marc Casado, Gavi, Fermin Lopez and Dani Olmo are the players right on top of Hansi Flick’s pecking order. Pablo Torre’s impressive performances in recent months, moreover, have seen him move up as well.

The one player who has fallen out of favour, thus, is Frenkie de Jong who was even whistled by the fans during the team’s recent clash and is largely seen now as a surplus resource.

On his way out?

De Jong’s season so far has been marred with hurdles from fitness setbacks to uninspired performances and the player still is sizeably away from his 100%.

Interestingly, as revealed by Fichajes, the player could well be in his final months as a Blaugrana player despite being the captain as the club no longer rules out his sale should the right offer arrive.

The outlet also adds that Liverpool, in particular, are attentive to his situation and see him as a perfect fit into Arne Slot’s dynamics as they are in dire need of a new midfield signing.

De Jong’s transfer to Anfield will break the headlines as one of the biggest moves of the summer transfer window should it materialise and could well serve as a win-win for all parties involved.

For Liverpool, the transaction will provide them with the services of a world-class midfielder while for Barcelona, it will rake in significant transfer fees for a player who is indeed surplus.

In terms of the player’s perspective, it will help him make a fresh start in a new league and help him get regular minutes in a novel system.

With Liverpool ready to make an offer, it remains to be seen if they can reach an agreement with Barcelona in the coming months. After all, the Catalans will be eager to extract as much as they can from his sale should it happen.
