The stage is set for the 205th edition of the famed Merseyside derby

Liverpool and Everton face off tonight in the final Merseyside derby of the season as the Premier League title favourites look to return to winning ways after losing in the Carabao Cup final.

The Reds spent the recent international break licking their wounds after crashing out of the Champions League on penalties to Paris Saint-Germain and then losing 2-1 to Newcastle United in the League Cup final in a miserable five-day run.

Those two losses were the club’s first in over a month, the most recent defeat beforehand being the 0-1 FA Cup loss to Plymouth Argyle. Now, the chance to claim a first win for several weeks over bitter crosstown rivals is a tantalising prospect.

Everton, though, will be equally motivated to extend that losing run to three matches. The reverse fixture, a 2-2 draw and the last Merseyside derby to ever be played at Goodison Park, made for a fine send-off for the ‘Grand Old Lady,’ as James Tarkowski’s 98th-minute volley sent the Blues into rapture.

Their form is remarkably middle-of-the-road, coming into the fixture with four consecutive draws to Manchester United, Brentford, Wolves, and West Ham, but they will face an uphill battle to add a tally to the ‘win’ column on Wednesday.

Date, kick-off time and venue

Liverpool vs Everton is scheduled for an 8pm BST kick-off today, Wednesday, April 2, 2025.

Liverpool vs Everton team news

Alisson Becker and Conor Bradley have returned to Liverpool training after recovering from their respective injuries but will both face a late fitness test. Alisson suffered a suspected concussion while facing Colombia on international duty, while Slot has hinted he will not rush Bradley back from his thigh injury.

Ryan Gravenberch is available for the match after recovering from a knock picked up in the Carabao Cup final, though Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez will both watch on from the sidelines.

As has become the norm this season, Everton will cross the park with an extensive injury list. Key midfielders Iliman Ndiaye and Dwight McNeil are both recovering from knee injuries and have returned to training but will not be fit for Wednesday. Striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin is in the same boat, back on the grass but not yet ready to play.

Vitalii Mykolenko will face a late fitness test ahead of the match, while Orel Mangala is set to remain on the sidelines for several months after injuring his ACL in late January.

Liverpool vs Everton prediction

Wednesday’s result will come down to how quickly Liverpool can recover from the funk that came with a cup final defeat and Champions League elimination - and Everton will be more than willing to add to the misery.

That said, Liverpool will be keen for revenge after having a Goodison win snatched from them last time out and could take advantage of Everton’s injury-hit squad.
