Liverpool’s search for defensive reinforcements has intensified amid growing uncertainty surrounding Virgil van Dijk’s future at Anfield. The Dutch captain is set to become a free agent at the end of the season, and while talks are ongoing, no agreement has been reached.

Van Dijk remains pivotal to Liverpool’s ambitions, but given his age, the club is cautious about committing to a long-term deal. While they hope to retain their leader, they are preparing for a scenario in which he departs.
According to Caught Offside, Arne Slot’s side have identified Konstantinos Koulierakis as a potential addition. The Wolfsburg centre-back has impressed this season, attracting interest from Premier League rivals Crystal Palace and Aston Villa, as well as European heavyweights AC Milan and Real Madrid.
Koulierakis has been one of the Bundesliga’s standout young defenders since joining Wolfsburg from PAOK Saloniki last summer. His performances have caught the attention of top clubs, with Liverpool now among those monitoring his development.

While Wolfsburg are pleased with his rapid progress, they are reportedly open to offers, setting an asking price in the region of €40m-€50m. German outlet Bild recently labelled the Greek international “one of the most sought-after defensive talents in Europe.”
Koulierakis’ profile aligns with Liverpool’s recruitment strategy—a young, athletic defender with strong ball-playing abilities. His composure in possession and tactical awareness make him a potential fit for Slot’s evolving defensive structure.
Liverpool’s growing interest suggests they are planning for a long-term defensive rebuild. Whether they proceed with a formal bid remains to be seen, but competition from other clubs could influence their next move.
Questions will be asked about whether Koulierakis is the right calibre of signing to replace a figure as influential as Van Dijk. While the Greek defender has potential, he remains untested at the highest level.
Liverpool have seen in the past how difficult it is to replace world-class defenders. The expectation from supporters is that the club should be targeting a more experienced, proven centre-back rather than taking a gamble on an emerging talent.
With AC Milan and Real Madrid also showing interest, it is clear Koulierakis has promise. However, Liverpool cannot afford to get this transfer wrong. If Van Dijk does depart, fans will want to see a commanding, established presence brought in—not just a promising name with resale value.
Arne Slot has an important task ahead. Defensive stability remains a priority, and the coming months will reveal whether Koulierakis is truly Liverpool’s top target or just one of many options being explored.
