As the Arne Slot era begins with silverware and soaring expectations, Liverpool’s recruitment strategy becomes ever more vital. Premier League champions once again, the Reds now look to refresh and reinforce. One name making the rounds is that of Bayer Leverkusen’s mercurial talent, Florian Wirtz. The Reds are already on the verge of confirming the arrival of Jeremie Frimpong after triggering his £29million release clause and his Leverkusen teammate could be the next piece for this Liverpool puzzle.
On a recent episode of Anfield Index’s podcast, David Lynch spoke with Dave Davis, shedding light on Liverpool’s reported interest in Wirtz. The discussion hinted at optimism, albeit grounded in the reality of stiff competition from Bayern Munich and the uncertainty surrounding the player’s own plans.
Lynch made clear that Liverpool are very much in the mix should the 21-year-old attacking midfielder decide to leave Germany.
“My understanding is that Liverpool still feel that Bayern Munich are the favourites or he could even stay and do another year at Leverkusen,” Lynch noted.“But if there’s any sniff that he wants to come to the Premier League then they will be there.”
This is not just another speculative name on a long list. The sense from Lynch’s tone was that Liverpool’s interest is concrete, underpinned by the club’s willingness to invest significantly in both fee and wages.
“Liverpool are willing to pay big money to get him in and to match the wages he is being offered, but it just comes down to the player’s decision.”
Slot, now vindicated by a stunning first season at Anfield, will no doubt want to put his stamp on the squad. Wirtz could be a defining signature of his project – a player who blends technical excellence with intelligence in the final third, and whose creativity could take Liverpool’s midfield to new heights.

This isn’t about Liverpool throwing money at the problem. It’s about strategy, identity, and timing. Wirtz isn’t just any target – he’s a player who fits the club’s recent evolution, offering dynamism and flexibility in attacking roles.
“The only thing we can be certain of is that if he does choose a Premier League then Liverpool will be in a very good position.”
That confidence comes not just from financial muscle, but from what Liverpool can offer right now. Premier League champions, Champions League contenders, and a manager who has already proven his methods on English soil. Wirtz would walk into a competitive squad with a winning culture and the promise of regular minutes.
There’s also a geopolitical angle at play.
“I did see rumours that it would be cheaper for a club outside of the Bundesliga because they clearly don’t want him to go there,” Lynch added.

It’s a subtle point but a meaningful one. Leverkusen, fresh off their own remarkable season under Xabi Alonso, would prefer Wirtz not to join domestic rivals. That puts Premier League clubs – and especially Liverpool – in a more favourable negotiating position, should the player make his intentions clear.
Arne Slot may have lifted the Premier League trophy, but this is no time for sentiment. A title defence will demand more depth and creativity. Wirtz would represent the kind of elite addition that keeps Liverpool not just competitive but dominant.
His addition would also send a strong message: that Liverpool mean business under Slot, and that the club remains one of Europe’s most attractive destinations for top young talents.
As Lynch concluded:
“Let’s see what happens and hopefully he chooses Liverpool.”
In that cautious optimism lies a truth Liverpool fans understand well. Big transfers are rarely simple, but when the ambition is aligned, and the timing is right, the stars can align. If Wirtz looks to England, Anfield could very well be his next stage.
