Darwin Nunez has flattered to deceive at Liverpool during the 2024/25 campaign, and he’s set to be used as a makeweight in a deal for a new Reds striker.

In 34 games in all competitions this season, the Uruguayan has scored just six goals and assisted five more (transfermarkt).

That’s clearly not going to be good enough for a demanding coach such as Arne Slot.

Indeed, Fabrizio Romano noted a deal was virtually done in January which would’ve taken Nunez to the Saudi Pro League.

There are also reports that there are four strikers under consideration to replace Nunez, whose career at Anfield would appear to be coming to an abrupt end.

One of those is thought to be Newcastle’s brilliant front man, Alexander Isak, and according to Football Insider, the Reds are willing to do a cash plus Nunez deal to land the in-form Swedish international. The outlet also suggest sources have described Isak as “perfect” for Liverpool.

In contrast to Nunez’s recent troubles in front of goal, Isak has bagged 19 goals and five assists in 29 total matches during the 24/25 campaign (transfermarkt).

Isak cost might delay Darwin Nunez transfer operation

An expectation that Isak would cost north of £100m isn’t without foundation, however, should Newcastle fail to qualify for the Champions League, the Magpies may have to revise that figure if the player indicates that he wants to move on.

It’s believed that failure to qualify for the premier European competition would be the only deal breaker to him staying at the club, and though Newcastle are in seventh place in the Premier League currently, they’re just three points behind Man City in the final Champions League place.

Even if Newcastle were to qualify, should Liverpool go on to win this season’s Premier League and/or in Europe, that would be a hell of a pull for any player looking for professional success.
