Wesley Fofana had initially been included in the France squad to face Italy and Belgium during the upcoming international break, however, ultimately he will play no part in Les Bleus’ UEFA Nations League fixtures, the FFF have confirmed.

Fofana missed almost the entirety of last season through injury, and the player himself is not willing to take any chances as he regains fitness and form. The FFF revealed that Fofana spoke with Didier Deschamps and in the wake of this exchange, it was decided that the defender will remain with Chelsea during the upcoming break. His absence is therefore linked to his recovery from last year’s injury, not a fresh injury.

Fofana has therefore returned to Chelsea. In his place, Deschamps has called up Sevilla’s Loïc Badé, rewarded for his good performance for France at the Olympics. The news will come as a blow to Inter Milan’s Benjamin Pavard, who was called up for the Euros, but who didn’t make an appearance during the tournament in Germany. He has, nonetheless, been a mainstay in the France set-up.
