Erik ten Hag was always interested in bringing in a right-back ever since he was appointed as Manchester United manager but that did not occur in the first two summers.

The Dutchman kept faith in Diogo Dalot, who impressed the manager enough to earn a brand-new deal. Aaron Wan-Bissaka also seemed to improve in the Dutchman’s first season before injuries meant he struggled last term.

The club decided to move on from the former Crystal Palace star and eventually brought in Noussair Mazraoui from Bayern Munich after prolonged negotiations.

Lots of right-backs were linked with a move to Old Trafford with Denzel Dumfries‘ name being a regular feature in gossip columns.

Dumfries interest

There were even talks of a swap deal with Wan-Bissaka heading to Inter Milan while the Netherlands international would come to Manchester.

The 28-year-old was refusing to sign a contract extension with the Nerazzurri with his deal ending in 2025 which meant the team from Milan were trying to offload him and recoup a fee.

Journalist Matteo Moretto wrote on CaughtOffside that while the Red Devils had entered negotiations at one stage in the summer, Dumfries is now expected to pen a new deal and remain at the San Siro.

However, talks over a new deal will likely see the player get offered a short-term extension instead which might indicate a future move away from Italy remains a possibility.

“Inter star Denzel Dumfries is still out of contract in the summer of 2025, but from what I am aware, the intention is to renew his contract, and Inter are in the process of doing so.

New deal at Inter

“The fact that he has remained this summer, rather than Inter trying to recoup some money for him is a sure sign that there is a willingness for him to stay.

“The idea is to renew him on a shorter deal though, rather than a four or five-year contract. It could be just a year or maybe more, but not a long-term deal. I’m told he will sign a new deal though, despite the lack of a public announcement.

“Dumfries is very comfortable in Milan and happy. The Dutch international is very much loved in the dressing room at Inter too. There were conversations with Manchester United in the early part of the summer, but they were not serious talks. Nothing was advanced or agreed.”

With United signing Mazraoui, it makes very little sense for the 20-time English league champions to go after Dumfries in the near future.
