Former Bayern Munich midfielder Lothar Matthaus expressed his disappointment towards the misuse of Thomas Muller in last night's UEFA Champions League play-off second-leg against Celtic.
Speaking to Sky Sports Germany, the 63-year-old believes Muller should have seen more minutes on the pitch in Bayern’s tense 1-1 draw with the Scottish champions.
“That was humiliating. It made me sad, and I feel sorry for him [Muller]. I was shocked.
“Thomas Muller doesn’t have to put himself through that. He is one of the greatest and most successful players of all time.
“So, for those few seconds, the coach can sub on another player. If that is the perspective for the future, then he should do something else.
“I don’t think he enjoyed it. For what? So, he can be credited with another Champions League appearance? I would have felt bad if I were him,” Matthaus concluded.
The outburst comes off the back of Vincent Kompany’s decision to introduce Muller in the 95th-minute of the game only for the final whistle to sound seconds later.
Harry Kane, who was an injury doubt before the match, was substituted by Kingsley Coman in the 46th-minute. A decision which left no recognised striker on the pitch for the Bavarian giants throughout the second-half.
