Luis Enrique has revealed Paris Saint-Germain’s plan to neutralise Liverpool’s “three fighter jets” during tomorrow’s UEFA Champions League Round of 16 first leg at the Parc des Princes. The Spaniard’s plan is simple: limit Liverpool’s possession of the ball.
Liverpool and PSG are two of the most on-form sides in Europe currently. “It is one of the best matches that we can see in Europe,” said Luis Enrique, previewing the tie. PSG are currently unbeaten domestically and are running away with the Ligue 1 title. Les Parisiens currently have a 13-point gap to second-placed Olympique de Marseille.
However, a difficult challenge awaits Luis Enrique and PSG on Wednesday night. He will be hoping to keep Liverpool’s forward line quiet. Mohamed Salah, Diogo Jota, Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo are all having strong seasons. Between them, they have 101 goal contributions this season.
“They are one of the best teams in Europe on the counterattack. We will try and keep the ball and not suffer too much in transition. Stopping their three fighter jets isn’t easy. If we manage to impose our style of play, we will not suffer too much. The goal is to be better and ensure that they don’t harm us in transition […] we have to have the ball, create more chances and defend efficiently, the same as in all of our other matches,” said Luis Enrique.
Those words were echoed by João Neves, who was asked specifically about Salah, who has 52 goal contributions in 39 games this season. “The best way to defend against these players is to have the ball and that is our strategy. We have to move the ball and produce a quality style of play. We will try and cut [their] possession of the ball and keep it as much as possible,” said the Portuguese midfielder.
