Rooney has been appointed by the Pilgrims over the summer ahead of their second year back in the second division.

The former England international previously worked in the Championship with Birmingham City and Derby County.

His stint at the Blues lasted just 15 games, overseeing only two victories, before he was dismissed.

Rooney will have a point to prove this season, with Plymouth aiming to avoid a relegation scrap in the upcoming campaign.

Carlton Palmer makes Wayne Rooney pressure claim

Palmer believes that Rooney will be under immediate pressure to earn results at Plymouth given his time at Birmingham.

He has claimed that the 38-year-old’s status as a big name brings with it a lot of attention, which necessitates good results.

“I suppose all eyes will be on Wayne Rooney,” Palmer told Football League World.

“Disappointing spell at Birmingham City, did well under difficult circumstances at Derby County, but this is a make or break job for Wayne Rooney in his managerial career.

“He has to make this work, he’s under a lot of pressure with his goalkeeper refusing to sign a new contract, he may well be sold.

“Then he’s got Morgan Whittaker, where Rangers have already had two bids turned down.

“But he’s under pressure here.

“I think he will be given a bit of latitude at Plymouth, but it’s one of those because he’s a high profile name, because he’s been so successful as a footballer at the highest level, then of course that comes with the territory when you come into management.

“So I think he’ll be under pressure.”

Palmer highlights Farke concern

Palmer also believes that the likes of Daniel Farke and Chris Wilder will be under pressure to bring results, with both clubs eyeing a promotion push this year.

“Then you’re looking at the managers at the top, Daniel Farke at Leeds United,” he added.

“Would’ve wanted him to get promotion last season, 90 points should’ve seen them get promotion.

“You’re looking at the teams up there who have got to get their teams going, Chris Wilder at Sheffield United.

“After getting relegated he’ll be under pressure to get them back up there.

“There’s several managers who will be under pressure, who will be expected to deliver big things in the Championship next season.

“But the one I think everyone will be looking at is Wayne Rooney at Plymouth, to see whether he can kick-start his managerial career again.”

Big moment in Rooney’s managerial career

This really is a make or break moment for Rooney’s managerial career, as another short-lived stint with underwhelming results could end any hopes of being a coach.

His time at Birmingham can be put down to mitigating circumstances to some extent, but failure to do well at Plymouth would be yet another bad mark on his CV.

The more they build up, the harder it becomes to get new jobs in the game, so he needs this to go well if he is to stick with this.
