Don Goodman has given his verdict on the possibility of Sunderland signing Glen Kamara this January
Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman believes that Glen Kamara could be a sensible signing for Sunderland this January.
According to Jeunes Footeux, the Black Cats are interested in a move to sign the midfielder amid their battle for promotion to the Premier League.
Régis Le Bris will be keen to strengthen his squad with the team in the mix for a top two spot in the Championship this season.
Kamara previously spent one season at Leeds United before signing for Rennes last summer, having only joined in 2023 from Rangers.
Goodman believes that Sunderland should pursue a move for Kamara if they are able to get a deal for the 29-year-old.
He has highlighted the player’s experience, as well as his performance levels for Leeds last season as reasons why it would be a deal that makes sense for the Wearside outfit.
"When I saw those links I thought 'That makes a lot of sense.',” said Goodman, via Plejmo.com.
"If that move is an option for Sunderland, I would be a fan of it."
Kamara joined Leeds following the club’s relegation from the Premier League, joining Daniel Farke’s side from Rangers in the summer of 2023.
He was a key part of the Whites’ first team squad, contributing three assists from 37 regular league appearances, with the club missing out on promotion through the play-offs.
Kamara ended up making the switch to French football following their Wembley defeat to Southampton, signing for Rennes.
He has gone on to make 13 appearances in Ligue 1 this season, including eight starts, with the team sitting 13th in the table.
Sunderland have targeted a lot of younger players in the last few years, so someone of Kamara’s calibre would be a change in strategy.
A loan move might make the most sense for the club, given that context.
Adding some experience to the squad amid their battle for a top two spot could be a smart use of the January window, and Kamara knows the league well from competing at this level with Leeds last year.
However, there should be some wariness if Rennes are already willing to part with the player just a few months after he arrived, especially given his lack of recent game time.
