Manchester City have completed the signing of West Ham United defender Risa Shimizu.
The 28-year-old joined the Hammers from Tokyo Verdy Beleza in 2022, and has since made 44 WSL appearances over two seasons.
“From the outside I think City play good football and have an interesting style," Shimizu revealed. "I also really want to play in the Champions League. It’s always been a dream of mine. I’m sure my teammates will help raise my level and I hope we can win something together as a team. I want to play every game possible.”
A familiar face will welcome Shimizu on her arrival in Manchester, as she revealed that she already knows one of her new team-mates well.
“I’ve played for quite a long time with Yui [Hasegawa]," she continued.
"I’m really looking forward to it, and just like Yui I want to become a crucial part of this team and win. She told me that it’s an incredible club and team!”
For those fans wanting to know what they are getting next season, Shimuzu has described her playing style in her own words.
“I usually play on the right side, but I can also play on the left side if needed," she said.
"Versatility, that’s what I would say my biggest strength is. City play football with a high possession style, which I like.
"I think I’m technically good and calm with the ball in possession, so I think I’ll play well in City’s style.”
After coming so close to winning the WSL last time around, Manchester City will welcome a player with lofty ambitions.
“I’ll always give everything for the club. I want to contribute as much as I can to winning trophies.”
Shimizu arrives in Manchester on a free transfer, having reportedly rejected a contract extension with West Ham.
