Ruben Amorim has discussed the prospect of Manchester United selling Kobbie Mainoo and other homegrown players to raise funds.
Manchester United are understood to be reluctantly prepared to consider offers for homegrown talent including Mainoo, Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford this month.
The Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSRs) incentivise the sale of homegrown talent with academy-produced players representing 100% profit on balance sheets.
That scenario has heightened the chance of academy players leaving in recent windows and Manchester United are set to consider significant offers to remain PSR compliant and raise transfer funds.
Chelsea are pushing to sign Mainoo, whose talks over a new deal at Old Trafford have stalled.
Speaking ahead of the club’s FA Cup tie with Arsenal this weekend, Amorim outlined how his side need to improve in the transfer market to avoid such sacrifices. However, he discussed a determination to keep Mainoo and build around the the club’s academy products.
“We need to improve recruitment, so that when we are targeting players we are sure they can cope with the demands,” Amorim said at his pre-match press conference.
“Also, we have to improve our academy. Young kids that feel the club in the right way and do some business to have money to invest in the team.
“Our idea is always to keep the best players and to build for this club, but I am really happy and like our players, especially the guys from the academy.”
On whether Mainoo will remain a Manchester United, player Amorim added: “Yeah, my players are always my favourites so I want to keep my players. It is a special moment in this club, it is a hard moment but I am really happy Kobbie is improving.”
