Manchester United are plotting a fresh move for Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite next summer, according to talkSPORT.
The Red Devils had two offers for the 22-year-old centre-back worth up to £50 million rejected before the start of this season, but he remains at the top of their wishlist.
United sporting director Dan Ashworth believes Branthwaite would suit new manager Ruben Amorim’s playing style and preferred 3-4-3 system.
The left-footed Wigton-born star can line up on the left side of the back three or even through the middle.
Sources close to Branthwaite say he wants to play for a top Premier League club, but they will not be alone in the race to sign the talented defender.
United could face competition from Liverpool. Their captain, Virgil Van Dijk, is in the final year of his contract, and even if he signs a new deal, they still need a successor for him.
Branthwaite has not started a game this season due to injury, and his omission from the starting line-up for Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at relegation rivals Southampton despite returning to full fitness was a shock.
His contract with Everton expires in 2027, and the Toffees have more than enough room to make massive demands. They asked for around £80m last summer and could make a similar request next year.
He helped Everton keep 12 clean sheets in the league last term while winning 67 percent of his duels in 35 appearances, establishing himself as one of the most promising young defenders in the game.
He is not the only left-sided defender linked with United. Amorim’s trusted general Goncalo Ignacio has been mooted as an option for the three-time Champions League winners.
However, it is a mystery why United’s first target would be another central defender, considering there are more pressing concerns at left-back, central midfield, and right-wing.
There are also concerns about where Amorim can utilise several current players in the squad.
