Man Utd 1-1 Arsenal player ratings: Liverpool the big winners from Old Trafford stalemate

·9 March 2025
The Red Devils took the lead right on the stroke of half-time thanks to an excellent Bruno Fernandes free-kick, but they could only hold on until the 74th minute when Declan Rice rattled a powerful finish into the far corner from distance.
Arsenal had the better of the match, but United will take plenty of heart from a spirited performance in which they had plenty of chances to take all three points.
The draw leaves United 14th in the table, a whopping 15 points off the top four and 13 adrift of rivals Manchester City in fifth. Arsenal, meanwhile, trail Liverpool by 15 points with just one game in hand, leaving the title race effectively over at this early stage, barring a stunning collapse from the leaders.
Here are the player ratings from Sunday’s encounter at Old Trafford based on the Squawka Score:
Andre Onana: 78%
Made five saves and prevented 0.73 goals to help Man Utd see out a point. Could do nothing about Rice’s precision finish into the far corner and was otherwise solid.
Leny Yoro: 67%
Was looking solid, misplacing just two of his 23 passes while winning all four of his ground duels and two of his four tackles. However, forced off at half-time injured, which will worry United fans given how much action he’s already missed this campaign.
Matthijs de Ligt: 57%
Misplaced an unusually high number of passes but got the job done defensively, winning both of his tackles and aerial duels, while making six clearances and four recoveries.
Victor Lindelof: 56%
Kept things simple and effective, making 10 clearances — the second-most among Premier League centre-backs this weekend — and winning all three of his aerial duels.
Noussair Mazraoui: 69%
Created three chances and one big chance, while also winning his one tackle and making three clearances and two interceptions. Only dribbled past once in an excellent performance.
Casemiro: 64%
Won a match-high 12 duels and made nine tackles to keep Arsenal at bay. A superb defensive showing through the middle, which was his primary focus, as shown by the fact he only completed 15 passes all game.
Bruno Fernandes: 72%
Dispatched a brilliant free-kick to give Man Utd the lead, but was quiet creatively, laying up just one chance. Felt like he was operating a little too deep to affect the game as he likes to.
Diogo Dalot: 66%
Dalot was only slightly less effective than Mazraoui on the opposite flank, with the Portugal international just a little guilty of giving up sloppy passes at times.
Alejandro Garnacho: 65%
A livewire with his forward runs on the break, but sometimes guilty of being too trigger-happy when teammates were better-placed to receive a pass. Supremely talented with a lot still to learn.
Christian Eriksen: 50%
Deployed a little further forward to relieve the physical load on him, but Eriksen looked well off the pace. Failed to attempt a shot or create a chance, while only completing 72% of his passes and winning one of four ground duels.
Joshua Zirkzee: 51%
Came close to scoring with a cheeky flick in the second half but was otherwise anonymous, winning just one of seven duels and only touching the ball 23 times.
David Raya: 73%
Made an excellent stop at the end, recovering to get up and clear the ball away as the goalmouth beckoned for Man Utd. Like Onana, Raya prevented 0.73 goals and made five saves.
Jurrien Timber: 66%
Completed a match-high three of his four attempted dribbles and is credited with the assist for Rice’s equaliser. Marked down slightly for his 87% pass success, losing his one aerial duel and 0% accuracy on crosses. But a great afternoon for Timber.
William Saliba: 68%
92.78% possession retention rate, which is among the best in the Premier League for centre-backs this weekend, while Saliba also made four clearances and three interceptions retaining possession, and won all five of his contested aerial duels.
Gabriel: 64%
At 97.53%, Gabriel is one of the few centre-backs this weekend to beat Saliba for ball retention, with no centre-back performing better in this regard. The Brazilian also made five clearances, one block and one interception retaining possession.
Riccardo Calafiori: 54%
Lasted just 58 minutes, during which he won just one of five overall duels and posted 0% success on dribbles and crosses. Not quite himself today.
Martin Odegaard: 72%
Created three chances and one big chance, but was only successful with one of his five dribbles and none of his six crosses. A mixed afternoon for Odegaard.
Thomas Partey: 72%
Got through a lot of defensive work as usual and used the ball well when he won it, completing 61 of 67 attempted passes and two of three dribble attempts.
Declan Rice: 78%
Took his goal superbly, while also making a brilliant match-saving tackle at the end. All of that was on top of 91% pass success, 15 passes into the final third and seven recoveries.
Ethan Nwaneri: 55%
0% success on dribbles (3), crosses (4) and tackles won (1), while he won just one of eight ground duels. Brought off just before the hour mark having failed to attempt a shot or create a chance. It just wasn’t Nwaneri’s day.
Mikel Merino: 44%
Lost the most duels of any player (14) and only attempted one shot, though he did create two chances. Look very uncomfortable in this unfamiliar role.
Leandro Trossard: 67%
Was a constant threat, but his score has taken a hit thanks to failing to score despite attempting six shots to the tune of 0.65 xG. Very wasteful at times.
Squawka’s new player rating system is wholly stats-based. Player scores are based on the numbers they put up across a range of on-ball events, from goals scored to tackles won.
We tailored each score to the players’ respective positions using extensive research and expertise. For example, forwards are rated on metrics like shots on target, touches in the opposition box, and big chances created. Meanwhile, centre-backs are rewarded for winning aerial duels, making blocks, successful long-range passes, etc.
