Manchester United are one of the clubs interested in signing Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap, according to The Athletic.
The Red Devils made just one high-profile signing in the winter transfer window, agreeing a deal for Lecce left-wing-back Patrick Dorgu.
United will likely splash the cash during the summer transfer window. Manager Ruben Amorim could prioritise a new striker.
United reportedly admire Delap, but Manchester City still have an advantage in the pursuit.
City include matching rights and buy-back clauses in most of their sales, and they could have a final say on the striker’s next move.
The Red Devils spent big money on Rasmus Hojlund in 2023, but he has scored just two goals in 19 league outings this term.
Joshua Zirkzee has also disappointed since his move from Bologna last summer. The 23-year-old has netted three goals in 23 league games for United.
Liam Delap, who has ‘incredible‘ pace, looks an upgrade with nine league goals for Ipswich, but the club should pursue a striker accustomed to the manager’s 3-4-2-1 formation.
Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyokeres would be perfect on the back of another exceptional campaign. He has scored 34 goals in 33 appearances this season.
The Swede is a modern striker who can also link-up play and create chances for his teammates. By contrast, Delap is more of a traditional number nine.
Ipswich may demand as much as £50m for Delap, but City could sign him for much less by utilising the buy-back clause in his contract.
Gyokeres could be available for around £63m due to a gentleman’s agreement at Sporting. Reuniting him with Amorim makes more sense for the Red Devils.
