The third round of the EFL Cup kicked off tonight with four sides securing their passage to the last 16.

Manchester United 7-0 Barnsley

Scorers: Rashford 16′, 58′, Antony (pen) 35′, Garnacho 45+2′, 49′, Eriksen 81′, 85′

Manchester United hammered Barnsley 7-0 at Old Trafford on a perfect night for Erik ten Hag and his team.

Marcus Rashford gave United the lead in the 16th minute with a great goal, jinking into the box and smashing the ball into the net after receiving a diagonal ball from Alejando Garnacho.

United made it two from the spot just under 20 minutes later, Antony dusting himself down after being fouled to confidently slot the ball home from 12 yards in his first start of the season.

It was three by half time, Garnacho firing home inside the box after some poor Barnsley defending.

After the break, the League One side fell apart, conceding again to Garnacho in the 49th minute, before Rashford got his own double, confidently finishing with his left foot after being played in.

Christian Eriksen got in on the act late, on hitting a brace of his own as United ran riot.

Everton 1-1 Southampton – Southampton win 6-5 on penalties

Scorers: Doucouré 20′; Harwood-Bellis 32′

Everton’s miserable start to the season continued with a 6-5 penalty shootout loss to fellow Premier League strugglers Southampton at Goodison Park after the game ended 1-1 at 90 minutes.

Sean Dyche’s side took the lead in the 20th minute through Abdoulaye Doucouré, who nodded home from close range after Michael Keane headed a corner in his direction.

As has been the case this season, the Toffees could not hold onto their lead, as Saints equalised just 12 minutes later via a Taylor Harwood-Bellis header from a free-kick.

Preston North End 1-1 Fulham – Preston win 16-15 on penalties

Scorers: Ledson 35′; Nelson 61′

On a stunning night at Deepdale, Preston defeated Fulham 16-15 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in normal time.

The Championship side took the lead against the run of play 10 minutes before half-time with a brilliant strike from Ryan Ledson.

Fulham equalised just after the hour, Reiss Nelson scoring his first goal for the club after Ryan Sessegnon pulled the ball back in his direction.

Preston eventually won a remarkable marathon shootout that had 34 penalties in total – a new EFL Cup record.

Queens Park Rangers 1-2 Crystal Palace

Scorers: Field 53′; Nketiah 16′, Eze 64′

Crystal Palace secured their passage to the fourth round of the EFL Cup after a narrow 2-1 win against QPR in a London Derby at Loftus Road.

Palace took the lead in the 16th minute, and it was a first goal for the club for Eddie Nketiah. A quick free-kick led to  Eberechi Eze sliding the ball across for the former Arsenal striker, who hit a low shot into the net.

Sam Field equalised for the Rs early into the second half, firing a left-footed shot home after Dean Henderson didn’t fully deal with a corner.

Oliver Glasner’s side regained the lead, and got the winner, in the 64th minute, with former QPR man Eze winning the ball in his own half before striking from 25 yards. The ball ended up in the net via a huge deflection off Steve Cook.
