Manchester City defender Risa Shimizu has undergone surgery on an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury.

The Cityzens confirmed the news via a post on their official club X account this morning.

The 28-year-old sustained the injury whilst representing Japan at the Olympic Games earlier this summer. The player had to come off in the second half of Nadeshiko’s 2-1 defeat to Spain.

Following a medical assessment, it was determined that Shimuzu has sustained an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury and she is likely to miss the entire 2024/2025 season.

The injury is a real blow for Shimizu who only joined Manchester City in July after leaving former club West Ham United. The defender signed a three-year deal at The Joie Stadium but she is likely to have to wait until next season to put her stamp on the team.

Shimizu is one of four Japanese players on Manchester City’s books. Midfielder Yui Hasegawa has spent the last two seasons with The Cityzens and she has now been joined in the North West by Shimizu, goalkeeper Ayaka Yamashita and forward Aoba Fujino.

Manchester City kick-off the new Barclays Women’s Super League season with a fixture against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday 22 September 2024. Shimizu will be cheering her teammates on from the sidelines.
