Following today’s FA Cup tie against Leyton Orient, Manchester City have a host of tough fixtures awaiting them. Pep Guardiola’s side will face Real Madrid, Newcastle, Real Madrid again and Liverpool in their next four fixtures. But despite what lies ahead the Manchester City players must solely be focused on beating Leyton Orient at the Gaughan Group Stadium today. They may pay a costly price if they take their eye off today’s opponent.
The FA Cup is a competition that has made its name off the back of famous upsets. It’s a tradition as old as the competition itself to see giant-killing wins by the lower-league sides against the powerhouse clubs of England’s footballing pyramid. Leyton Orient will be eager to cause such an upset today. Backed by their passionate and loyal home support the Leyton Orient players and manager will be up for the occasion in front of them.
It’s against this backdrop that the Manchester City players simply must perform today and do the job that is expected of them. There can be no looking ahead from Pep Guardiola’s squad. They must arrive at the Gaughan Group Stadium and leave with a victory. If they do, it could set them up for what lies ahead. But they simply must do what is expected of them.
Speaking during his pre-game press conference Pep Guardiola knows today’s match will be a tricky test for his team. He explained: “Always we have problems away in this competition in the FA Cup or Carabao Cup against teams from the Championship, League One, League Two we struggle. Every game is an opportunity.”
Manchester City must beat Leyton Orient today. They can only shift their focus to what lies ahead after today’s match. That’s the equation in front of Pep Guardiola’s side today.
