Manchester United have confirmed the arrival of Matthijs de Ligt from Bayern Munich for a fee of £43 million with add-ons.

De Ligt leaves Bayern after two seasons, in which he made 75 appearances and scored five goals, as well as winning the 2022/23 Bundesliga title.

He has also previously played for both Juventus and Ajax, where he broke through under United boss Erik ten Hag and went on to captain the club to the brink of the Champions League final while still a teenager.

Now, he is set to call Manchester home, with the Dutchman penning a five-year deal with the option for a sixth at Old Trafford.

The 24-year-old, who has made a startling 369 senior career appearances already, is the latest player to reunite with ten Hag, following on from André Onana, Lisandro Martínez and Antony.

While Christian Eriksen didn’t play under ten Hag and Donny van de Beek was not signed by him, both are also products of the famous Amsterdam club.

United will hope that De Ligt will prove to be a suitable and more durable successor to Raphaël Varane, who departed on a free transfer after three injury-hit seasons in Manchester.
