Manchester United have all but completed the signing of Chido Obi-Martin, but a formal announcement will not be made imminently.

Mikel Arteta has led one of the most ambitious projects in Europe at Arsenal, turning the North London outfit into genuine title contenders with a relatively young squad. As a result, the Emirates has become a very attractive spot for top talents.

However, the Red Devils still managed to outmuscle Arsenal this summer, luring one of their academy’s brightest jewels to Carrington.

Obi-Martin, who bagged a staggering 10 goals against Liverpool in Arsenal under-16s’s 14-3 win last year, decided earlier this summer to depart Arsenal despite their strong desire to extend his stay.

The Dane also attracted serious interest from other English clubs as well as several sides in Germany, but ultimately United convinced him to place his trust in their project.

According to The Athletic, the young striker completed his medical earlier this month, having “broadly agreed personal terms” with United.

Now, United are in talks with Arsenal over a compensation fee for their academy star. The expectation is that negotiations will be concluded positively, without any need to go to a Premier League tribunal.

However, even if the two clubs find a swift agreement, given his age, the Premier League will reportedly go through a ratification process, which could “take several weeks.” Accordingly, his announcement could be delayed.

Even after the announcement, eager United fans may have to wait a while before seeing Obi-Martin in action under Erik ten Hag.

It is understood the signing is viewed as one for the academy rather than the senior side. Obi-Martin is expected to join United’s under-18s and under-21s.

Academy striker Joe Hugill recently left United to join Wigan Athletic on loan, leaving a void that might now be filled by Obi-Martin. Further, the report states that the 16-year-old could potentially get some first-team training minutes when appropriate.

The opportunity to train with the likes of Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund, with Ruud van Nistelrooy watching, could certainly prove great for the starlet’s development.
