It appears as if Manchester United are intent on keeping Harry Maguire around despite rumours of his potential exit.
Last week, The Peoples Person discussed links between Maguire and four clubs that have set their sights on the English centre-back.
Napoli, Galatasaray, and Leicester City were all named as interested parties, as were Fenerbahce.
What’s more, several other Premier League teams are also believed to be interested in landing his signature should United decide against triggering his contract extension.
Still, Maguire has reportedly been holding out hope that United would extend his contract, with manager Ruben Amorim expected to have a big say on whether or not he will remain at the club.
Furthermore, Maguire himself confirmed that he and Man United have made positive strides toward signing a contract extension.
Now, it seems increasingly likely that Maguire’s future lies at Old Trafford, at least over the near term.
“Man United are likely to trigger Harry Maguire’s one-year contract extension option,” Football Insider reported.
“The 31-year-old is currently able to agree a pre-contract with foreign sides in the January transfer window but United are keen to extend his deal and prevent that,” the article continued.
“United want to safeguard the defender’s value by activating the option in his existing deal.”
While Maguire fell down the pecking order when former manager Erik ten Hag arrived, he has since revived his United career. The England international has played in 10 Premier League matches out of a possible 17, starting on six occasions.
His importance has been amplified due to United’s multiple injury casualties, including Leny Yoro and Lisandro Martinez who suffered setbacks earlier this season.
Given his improved form and commitment to the club, Maguire would be a great defensive asset for United going forward, particularly if Amorim persists with his formation that requires three at the back.
