In a recent report, Fichajes stated that Manchester United are facing stiff competition for Atletico Madrid defender Jose Gimenez. It has been claimed that the Red Devils will have to rival Chelsea and Barcelona in the race to land the Uruguayan centre-back.
Gimenez has enjoyed a solid campaign at the Wanda Metropolitano as he has put in a string of dominant performances for Diego Simeone’s side on the defensive end of the field. The 29-year-old has secured one assist in 27 appearances for Atletico Madrid this season across various competitions.
The Uruguay international has done well to average 0.8 tackles, 0.5 interceptions and 3.1 clearances per game in La Liga football. He has even distributed the ball accurately from the back after making 84.7% of his attempted passes in the Spanish top flight (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the Spanish club will run out in the summer of 2028. Hence, it won’t be easy for the Red Devils to recruit him on the cheap in the upcoming transfer window.

Gimenez is a solid tackler of the ball and can scan the danger well to secure the ball back for his team on the defensive end of the pitch. He can make the odd interception for his team inside his half and doesn’t mind clearing the danger when needed.
The Uruguay international is primarily a central defender but can also operate as a right-back or as a defensive midfield if told to do so. He even excels at playing his way out from the back.
We can expect Gimenez to add more bite and steel to Man United‘s backline. He is vastly experienced at the highest level and has what it takes to nail down a regular starting spot at Old Trafford next season.
At 29, Gimenez is in his prime right now and could help the Mancunian club challenge for some major trophies once again in the coming years. Thus, a defender of his quality would be well worth the fight, so the Red Devils should focus on going all out to snap him up in the summer.
