Manchester United are hoping to spark a bidding war for Mason Greenwood that starts at €28 million.

The 22 year old striker spent last season at Getafe after being told he had no future at the club in spite of his legal case being dropped in 2023.

The Bradford born star enjoyed a very successful season last year in La Liga, having been named Getafe’s player of the season, and this has tempted many clubs to express their interest in him.

Whilst Spanish sides were originally linked with the player, Italian teams SS Lazio and Juventus alongside French club Marseille, have most recently been discussed as possible destinations.

It has been reported that Greenwood himself sees Lazio as his preferred destination and the Serie A side are said to be “willing to do anything” to get their hands on him.

Adding even more complexity to the saga, it was relayed here two days ago that Marseille had in fact made a better offer than the Rome-based club for the former United academy player.

According to RMC Sport, “Marseille’s leaders have spoken several times with Mason Greenwood , who is very attracted by the prospect of playing at OM. Marseille considers him a real opportunity. Marseille remain cautious, but are hopeful that this deal will come to fruition soon.”

Italian paper Corriere dello Sport claim this morning that “the Lazio president insists on Greenwood, but has not raised the offer of 20 million plus 50% future resale.”

They also refute the fact that Marseille have made a better bid for the forward than Lazio and state that all eyes are on whether Greenwood will return to pre-season training on Monday at United.

Commenting on the Red Devils’ stance on the Englishman they report “to date the price remains set at 30 million pounds, approximately 35 million euros, and a discount is not contemplated.”

“Manchester wants to launch an auction that could only start with an offer of 28 million.”

The forward should command high value after the season he has just had, so the club will rightfully hope that they can encourage better bids from European clubs and use each other’s interest to drive up the price.

One of the benefits of such a strategy is that the longer a move drags on, the greater the number of clubs who will feel tempted to jump in. It has been reported by RMC Sport that there is “interest from Fenerbahçe and an imminent offer from the Turkish club” may be forthcoming. Benfica have also been previously mentioned as harbouring interest in the player and may also feel inclined to test the waters with a future bid.

With the arrival of sporting director Dan Ashworth, United should be able to act faster and more decisively in the market. Nonetheless, they will also have to walk the tightrope of not settling for a cheap sale but at the same time, not waiting too long, so they can actually make use of the money generated from a Greenwood sale in this window.
