Manchester United reportedly offered Leny Yoro a salary four times the figure tabled by Real Madrid in order to secure his signature.

United paid an initial £52million to sign Yoro from Lille in July, fending off interest from the European champions.

The 18-year-old signed a five-year contract at Old Trafford to become one of the first new signings of Jim Ratcliffe’s INEOS team.

And according to Spanish sports paper Marca, United offered Yoro far more than what Real were willing to do.

It is said the United deal was worth £8m (€9.5m) annually - around £154,000 a week - compared to Real’s £2.1m (€2.5m) pay packet worth around £40,000 a week.

Madrid were in the market for a new defender after letting veteran Nacho leave the club following the expiration of his contract.

But United’s desire to sign the young Frenchman prevailed and he was given the No15 shirt in Manchester.

Yoro impressed Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag quickly at the club, playing in their 2-0 pre-season friendly over Rangers.

Ten Hag said: “For the first time, after just one training [session], it’s a very mature performance.

“That’s what we saw when we scouted him. It’s great to have him. He’s a very young, talented centre‑back and there’s a lot to come.”

However, Yoro suffered a serious foot injury on United’s pre-season tour of the United States and is not expected to be available until November.

United did make two further additions to their defence in the shape of Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui for a combined fee of around £60m from Bayern Munich.
