Bruno Fernandes put the visitors ahead before Diogo Dalot was sent off and two minutes later Gabriel equalised. Martin Odegaard then had the chance to take the lead from the penalty spot, but Altay Bayindir saved.

Kai Havertz missed a host of chances both in normal time and extra time, and then missed during the shootout as United ran out winners.

Here’s how Ruben Amorim’s side rated at the Emirates Stadium...

Altay Bayindir 8

Kicking had Amorim tearing his hair out and poor punch lead to Arsenal leveller. But made amends with outstanding penalty save from Odegaard, then twice from Rice. Shootout stop from Havertz the key.

Matthijs de Ligt 8

Dragged into the channel against Martinelli in what should have been a worrying matchup but did well. Unlucky with deflection for Gabriel goal. Brilliant block on Rice in extra-time. Goal-line clearance in extra-time was unbelievable.

Harry Maguire 8

Unsure whether to step into midfield with Odegaard but defended the box superbly. Incredibly harshly treated with penalty award. Booked.

Lisandro Martinez 7

Relished the challenge of going down to ten men but needed to help with Sterling’s darts inside. Sent Raya wrong way with penalty. Booked.

Noussair Mazraoui 7

Vital defending at the far post. An underused outlet countering on the right, then switched to the left at half-time.

Manuel Ugarte 6

Started well with fair cruncher on Odegaard but struggled to get near the playmaker thereafter. A big part of the rearguard once down to ten men, though lucky to escape punishment for clash with Havertz.

Kobbie Mainoo 5

Tested Raya with low curler from range. Weak defensive header gave Gabriel chance to equalise. Booked.

Diogo Dalot 3

Was finding Jesus an awkward opponent until Brazilian’s withdrawal. Dreadful decision to fly in to Merino on a booking.

Bruno Fernandes 7

United needed more to relive pressure in a frustrating first-half, summed up by booking for dissent. But delivered moment of quality when required with outstanding finish. Cool penalty.

Alejandro Garnacho 6

In for Amad Diallo in the only outfield change. Completely ineffective in the first-half but came alive to win ball and make opener with smart cut-back.

Rasmus Hojlund 5

Nominally a hold-up man but won little against Gabriel and Saliba in thankless task.

Substitutes

Joshua Zirkzee (Hojlund 81’) 7

Denied by brilliant Raya save in extra-time. Stroked winning penalty.

Toby Collyer (Mainoo 81’) 7

Mucked in with some good defensive graft.

Amad Diallo (Garnacho 81’) 7

A surprise he did not come on earlier. Pace gave ten men a threat in behind. Fine penalty.

Tyrell Malacia (Ugarte 91’) N/A

Leny Yoro (Maguire 104’) N/A

Shaped to wallop penalty, then calmly slid home.
