Manchester United are prepared to meet the £62.5m release clause in the contract of Matheus Cunha this summer.

Cunha has been in exceptional form for Wolves this season despite his side’s struggles in the Premier League.

The Brazilian has scored 13 goals and provided four assists in 24 league starts, performances which have helped keep Vitor Pereira’s team outside the bottom three.

On Tuesday, he scored his first international goal during Brazil’s defeat to Argentina in World Cup qualification.

Cunha turned down interest from rival clubs in January to sign a new deal at Wolves. However, a release clause of £62.5m was included ahead of predicted summer interest in his services.

Aston Villa, Arsenal, Nottingham Forest and Newcastle have all been linked, while Spanish outlet Fichajes are claiming that Manchester United are ready to meet his release clause.

Cunha is viewed as an ideal fit for Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-3 system with the 25-year-old at home in an advanced midfield role. Wolves have operated in a similar system for much of the current campaign.

Amorim is determined to increase the goal threat in his side, with forwards Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund having combined for just six Premier League goals this season.

United’s ability to spend is likely to be dictated by outgoings. The Red Devils are set to allow Victor Lindelof and Christian Eriksen to leave on free transfers, while offers will be listened to for Marcus Rashford, Casemiro, Kobbie Mainoo and Antony among others.

United are currently 13th in the Premier League table and set to miss out on Champions League qualification as things stand. However, victory in the Europa League will seal a place in next season’s competition. Amorim’s side face Lyon in the quarter-finals next month.
