The young midfielder has been ruled out for a number of weeks after last week picking up an injury during training.

The 19-year-old has emerged as a key player at United over the past year and his absence, along with a host of other fitness concerns, left ageing Casemiro as the only recognised fit central midfielder for the defeat at Tottenham.

Mainoo's injury was one part of a damaging few days for United, who also saw Amad Diallo ruled out for the season, Manuel Ugarte suffer a knock and both Christian Eriksen and Leny Yoro come down with illness.

It had been reported earlier this week that Mainoo hopes to return for United following the international break in March, ruling him out for eight games in total.

However, when asked for an update on his players' fitness, Amorim was reluctant to set a timeline.

"It’s hard to know," he said. "Amad is for a long time. Mase [Mason Mount] continues to make his recovery, Luke [Shaw] as well, I don’t have a day.

"Toby [Collyer] seems to be the closest but not known. Kobbie recovery, I don’t know. We have to adapt to the schedule."

Amorim did have positive news to deliver, however, with Ugarte, Eriksen and Yoro all available to face Everton on Saturday.

Asked how training has gone this week, the United boss told reporters: "We didn't lose players, we recover players. Chris, Manu and Leny return," said Amorim.

"I felt that the week is really good. I see things in trainings but sometimes it’s hard to pass that to the game, I feel they are improving, tomorrow is another opportunity to show a better performance."
