Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has revealed that Joshua Zirkzee (23) will likely miss the second leg of their Europa League quarter-final with Olympique Lyonnais.

The €42.5 million summer signing pulled up short during Sunday’s 4-1 defeat to Newcastle United, clutching at his hamstring. He was unable to continue and was swiftly replaced by Rasmus Højlund (22).

Amorim said of the summer signing in post-match comments to the club’s reporters, “I think he will be out for some games, so let’s focus on the next one.” It’s an injury which comes at a difficult time for the Portuguese head coach. With United in 14th and eliminated from their domestic cup competitions, a lot rests on the result of Thursday’s match at Old Trafford.

The scores are currently level at 2-2 after the first-leg in France. Zirkzee believed that he provided United with the win when he scored in the 88th minute. However, a 95th-minute equaliser from Rayan Cherki would burst the Premier League club’s bubble.
