Amad also set to be rewarded for impressive form under Ruben Amorim
Ruben Amorim has confirmed that Manchester United will trigger their option to extend Harry Maguire’s contract.
The 31-year-old was set to be out of contract at the end of the season, but that deal will now run through until June 2026.
"I spoke with him this morning, I told him. We need him a lot in this moment,” Amorim said at a press conference on Friday ahead of his side’s trip to Liverpool on Sunday.
“We are going to trigger happily the option for him. We are starving for leaders on the pitch, he is a leader.”
The United boss added: "I think it is not one thing of our team, it is all the teams. If you want to be a top, top team you have to be leaders and we have that in the dressing room, but they have to step up.
“We have a lot of young kids also and this moment is really hard. We can look at the table but you are still Manchester United."
Amorim also revealed that United are “near” to agreeing a new deal for Amad Diallo.
The 22-year-old’s current deal will expire in the summer as it stands, though United do have the option to extend it by a further season.
However, the club have been in talks over a new long-term deal, with Amad a rare positive on the pitch in recent weeks.
He struck late to complete a dramatic comeback win over Manchester City, and has scored five goals and provided seven assists in all competitions.
