Chelsea play Leicester this weekend, and that means Enzo Maresca faces his old team – but also that Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall faces the club whose academy he was produced in.

This prompted a question in the press conference today about the midfielder and how he was getting on since his summer move from the Foxes.

Maresca had a very interesting answer which surprised us a little:

“At the beginning he struggled a little to accept that he was not playing many games,” the coach said of the 26 year old who he brought with him from the King Power Stadium.

“Now, probably after a while, he has realised that he has to be calm, he has to understand. At this moment he’s much better. He played an important game tonight from the start. That shows that I really trust Kiernan. Kiernan knows that Cole [Palmer] played there, Enzo [Fernandez] played there, Christo [Nkunku] played there. So we have many, many players in terms of quality in playing in that position.”

KDH unhappier than he seemed from the outside

That is very interesting indeed. For all of his failings as a player and as a signing, we had assumed that at least KDH had known what his role was going to be from the start, and would have accepted it.

It sounds like he’s made much more of a fuss than we have seen from the outside.

The injuries in midfield mean he’s actually playing pretty regularly in the B team at the moment and we saw him play the full game last night despite looking pretty out of his depth.

But if he’s not playing as much as he wants, AND he’s causing trouble about it, AND he doesn’t look good enough anyway – that surely all adds up to a departure this summer, whether on loan or permanently.
