Olympique de Marseille’s Spanish right-back Pol Lirola (25), currently on loan at Elche, is set to join Serie A side Monza, Gianluca Di Marzio reports. Lirola joined Marseille in January 2021 on a loan with option to buy from Fiorentina and was signed on a 5-year-deal the following summer for a €13m fee. Lirola went on to play 51 games with Les Phocéens, scoring one goal and delivering two assists. But newly-appointed Croatian OM manager Igor Tudor did not intend to use him and the Spaniard slipped down the pecking order when Marseille sanctioned the signing of French International right-back Jonathan Clauss (30).
Loaned to La Liga outfit Elche with an option to buy last summer, Lirola failed to prove a mainstay for the bottom-placed, and still winless, Spanish side. He only played eight of a possible seventeen league games. Serie A outfit Monza recently found an agreement with Marseille regarding Lirola’s loan with option to buy. Now, Di Marzio reports, the Spaniard has agreed to come back to Italy following previous spells with Juventus (2016), Sassuolo (2016-2019) and Fiorentina (2019-2021).
