R’s boss Marti Cifuentes has revealed that Sam Field faces a long lay-off and will miss important meetings with the Baggies and Boro.
Queens Park Rangers boss Marti Cifuentes has revealed midfielder Sam Field is set for a “long” lay-off and will miss crunch matches against West Brom and Middlesbrough.
The R’s confirmed on social media that Field missed out on a place in the matchday squad last weekend against Sheffield United after picking up an ankle problem against Portsmouth last month.
The former West Brom holding midfielder has been an ever-present figure in the QPR setup under Cifuentes, with his absence against the Blades only the second time this season he’s missed a second-tier game.
A defeat to Chris Wilder’s men at Loftus Road has seen the West London outfit go on an inconsistent run of form lately, with three defeats from their last four matches leaving the club down in 14th place, now eight points off a spot inside the top six.
QPR will have to ensure they turn around such a dismal streak, with a trip to The Hawthorns to take on promotion-chasing West Brom not an ideal fixture to try and regain confidence.
Now the task gets even harder with defensive stalwart Field out of action for the immediate future, with Cifuentes offering a downbeat assessment on the injury issue.
As reported by London World, Marti Cifuentes confirmed Sam Field missed the game against Sheffield United because of an ankle problem, admitting the 26-year-old is facing a chunk of time on the sidelines.
Cifuentes said: “I think that the club will make a statement on Monday to explain more about it. Unfortunately, with Sam, it seems like it’s going to be a bit long after the tackle with Ogilvie [Connor, Portsmouth]. Nico [Madsen] felt just sick yesterday with fever and so on and obviously wasn’t ready for playing today. Hopefully he will be ready for next week.”
Meanwhile, QPR have been buoyed by the return of midfielder Lucas Anderson to the matchday squad, who has been out since late December after sustaining an injury against Norwich City.
While he didn’t get any minutes off the bench against Sheffield United, the club are hopeful he will get back onto the pitch for when they meet West Brom and Middlesbrough.
There’s no doubt Sam Field being ruled out by injury is a devastating blow, with the midfielder such a key figure at the club since the arrival of Marti Cifuentes back in October 2023.
With his high levels of energy and natural ability to read the game to offer a protective layer to the backline, Field has made 33 appearances and has also been one of the first names on the teamsheet, so QPR will have to develop a plan of how to deal without him in order to push up the table between now and May.
