Southampton midfielder Mateus Fernandes has highlighted the one thing Southampton must do going forward in the Premier League.
Mateus Fernandes scored his first goal for Southampton at the weekend. However, the game was certainly overshadowed by Southampton's defensive mistakes, which saw Liverpool take three points from St Marys Stadium.
Nevertheless, Mateus Fernandes was still given his moment. The Portuguese midfielder celebrated with the Southampton fans, which was a nice momentous occasion to witness.
Speaking after the match, Mateus Fernandes addressed his time at Southampton, claiming to be happy. He also highlighted the one thing which Southampton need more than anything right now.
According to the Daily Echo, Mateus Fernandes hinted that Southampton must start training harder to put points on the board. He claimed to be happy at Southampton and that he loves the city. However, he recognises the need to pick up Premier League points, for the sake of Southampton fans.
Speaking to the media, Mateus Fernandes said: “I very much like the atmosphere of the stadium, I like the city very well. I enjoy every day here, my family too. I just want to win for the fans and the whole city. It’s hard to play against Liverpool. I think we played well, we fought well but we need points. We need wins. We will train for that.”
It's good to see players taking accountability. They cannot roll over and accept this situation as one which is out of their control.
The truth is that against Liverpool, the game could have been won. The players cannot fall into the trap of thinking 'well, it's Liverpool' because while this is true, the game was there for the taking, with Southampton even leading.
Mateus Fernandes is a brilliant character. Despite still being in the early stages of his career, he is showing every potential to be a Southampton leader later down the line. Russell Martin only hopes that Fernandes remains happy at St Marys.
