Liverpool FC once again proved their mettle, clinching a thrilling 3-2 victory against Southampton at St. Mary’s. Under the guidance of Arne Slot, Liverpool continue to shine, consolidating their position eight points clear at the Premier League summit. This win was dissected in the Gags Tandon Show on Anfield Index TV, with in-depth commentary from host Gags Tandon and guest Jack McIndoe. Their insights offered fans an engaging breakdown of a pulsating match.
Gags Tandon opened the show with enthusiasm, reflecting on the victory and the launch of Anfield Index’s YouTube channel. “It’s insane,” Tandon declared, “this Liverpool team, they’re now eight points clear at the top.” He emphasised the significance of such wins, especially in the challenging post-international break period.
For McIndoe, debuting on Anfield Index’s live watch-along was special, particularly given the outcome. “It was a hard-earned victory,” he noted, adding, “I’m just happy we won on my debut.” Such positivity was a recurring theme throughout their analysis of Liverpool’s triumph.
The hosts celebrated Liverpool’s relentless pressing, highlighting its pivotal role in Dominic Szoboszlai’s 30th-minute opener. Gags remarked, “Szoboszlai’s off-the-ball work is incredible… He ran and ran and ran.” Jack McIndoe echoed this sentiment, praising Szoboszlai’s pressing intensity as key to Liverpool’s success.
However, Southampton proved no pushovers. McIndoe noted their aerial dominance, saying, “Southampton were winning every single ball in the air,” a factor that caused Liverpool problems defensively. Despite this, Liverpool’s attacking intensity eventually broke through, showcasing the versatility and persistence that Slot has instilled.
Liverpool’s talisman, Mohamed Salah, was instrumental yet again. His equaliser, a deft chip past Southampton’s goalkeeper, had McIndoe raving: “It might not look a lot, but it’s world-class ability. Salah knew exactly where to place it.” Gags chimed in, pointing to Salah’s sharpness and vision, calling the finish “genius.”

Graeme Birch’s precise long ball to Salah for the goal drew admiration, with Gags declaring, “Graeme has elevated his game under Slot.” McIndoe called it a “textbook” Liverpool play, showcasing the team’s ability to seamlessly execute tactical plans under pressure.
Despite the result, there were critical moments defensively that drew the ire of the hosts. Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konaté were singled out for their errors, including the penalty that gifted Southampton their second goal. “That’s probably the shakiest I’ve seen Konaté,” lamented Gags, adding that his early yellow card affected his confidence.
McIndoe weighed in on Liverpool’s defensive lapses, noting the impact of Southampton’s imposing forward play: “You can’t put defenders under that amount of pressure, especially against a pressing-heavy team like Liverpool.” The penalty decision was deemed unfortunate but valid, with Gags quipping, “It’s one of those millimetre decisions that leave you frustrated.”
Gags and Jack concluded by reflecting on the broader implications of the win. With key players like Trent Alexander-Arnold and Luis Díaz missing, the victory underscored Liverpool’s depth and resilience. Salah’s leadership was also a focal point, with McIndoe describing him as “dragging us there,” and Tandon calling him “an all-timer… perhaps Liverpool’s greatest Premier League player.”
Yet, Tandon sounded a note of caution, urging the club to bolster its squad in January: “Let’s not get carried away. We need reinforcements to maintain this form.”
Liverpool’s win over Southampton was far from perfect, but it highlighted the team’s character and tactical adaptability. As Jack McIndoe aptly summarised, “It’s such a joy to watch Liverpool every single week.” With Arne Slot at the helm and players like Salah and Szoboszlai thriving, the Reds look primed for a strong season.
