Media blames one Southampton player for losing to Liverpool

After Southampton disappointingly lost to Liverpool at the weekend, the media is placing the blame on one Southampton player in particular.

Southampton played great against Liverpool. Heading into the match, nobody in the world would have predicted the Saints to be drawing with Liverpool at half-time, let alone when they took the lead shortly after the interval.

Low and behold, Mohamed Salah scored two goals to overturn Southampton's one goal advantage. So, the Saints actually dropped three points against Liverpool.

The result feels bittersweet because it was a common tale of Southampton's campaign - Good football was played but ultimately, no points were picked up.

Now, Southampton are in an extremely worrying position. The three teams ahead of them picked up points - Wolves winning their match, with Crystal Palace and Ipswich drawing theirs. Not good.

Give Me Sport has blamed goalkeeper Alex McCarthy for his costly mistakes against Liverpool. In fact, writer Will Lancaster believes that McCarthy's mistakes could have cost Russell Martin his job.

It is certainly true that Alex McCarthy made a few mistakes which could have been avoided. More particularly, he was not confident with playing out from the back, which gave Liverpool more chances than necessary.

As the league-leaders, the Liverpool attackers licked their lips when they could sense the lack of confidence held by Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy.

This was a huge game and one which Southampton were not tipped to win. However, given the trajectory of the match, Southampton fans are left with the feeling that three points might have been picked up with Aaron Ramsdale between the sticks. As a minimum, it would have been one.

McCarthy is not Ramsdale. This is not rocket science as despite having more experience, Ramsdale is better suited to playing Premier League football than his counterpart.

Still, Southampton fans must not turn on Alex McCarthy. The back-up goalkeeper was thrown in at the deep end and ultimately, it wasn't his day.

We would be remiss not to refute the claim from GMS, that McCarthy has "cost [Russell] Martin his job," Martin has been under pressure for a long time - McCarthy making a few mistakes against the team top of the league should not cost Martin his job.

If Russell Martin is sacked, it'll be a build up of moments. Not simply those embarrassing moments from McCarthy at the weekend.
