GLENDALE, Ariz. — Mexico and Ecuador played to a scoreless draw to conclude action in Group B of the 2024 CONMEBOL Copa America on Sunday at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.
Julio Gonzalez earned his second clean sheet of the tournament and provided three saves. One of the stops came in the 19’ when he punched out a short free kick from Kendry Paez.
Cesar Huerta had a header inside the box in the 21’, but the attempt went wide.
Santiago Gimenez struck inside the box in the 45’+1, but the forward’s header was just over the crossbar.
Julian Quiñones struck in the 57’ but was denied by Ecuadorian goalkeeper Alexander Dominguez.
Quiñones struck from distance in the 65’, but Dominguez deflected the attempt. Gimenez struck near the right post to follow up on the play but hit the woodwork.
Guillermo Martinez was blocked in the 90’+10 as Mexico continued to search for the goal that would have put them through to the knockout stage.
The Mexican offense finished the day with 18 shots to Ecuador’s eight. Santiago Gimenez led the team with five attempts.
With the teams splitting the points, Ecuador finishes as the second-place team and moves on to the quarterfinals. Mexico exits the tournament in the group stage for the third time in 11 participations.
