Mexico sail into Gold Cup knockouts with Haiti victory | OneFootball

Mexico continued their good vein of form in Gold Cup Group B, downing Haiti to wrap up qualification to the knockout rounds. Here is what went down in the 90 minutes.

After a comfortable victory for Mexico on matchday one in Group B, Jaime Lozano named an unchanged team to keep the momentum rolling.

While El Tri appeared to pick up where they left off against Honduras, they seemed to have left their shooting boots in Houston.

Lozano’s men spurned a flurry of chances in the opening 45 minutes against Haiti, with the worst miss coming just before the break, as Henry Martín somehow sent his point-blank effort straight at the keeper to spare Haiti’s blushes at half-time.

It did not take long for Mexico to find their opener after the restart however, as Martín redeemed himself inside of a minute to head home from close range and fire El Tri into the lead.

Mexico pounced on a Haiti side still licking their wounds, snatching their second through a Ricardo Adé own goal just 10 minutes later.

Haiti would not bow out however, as Danley Jean-Jacques headed home from a corner in the final 15 minutes to cut the lead in half and make Mexico sweat.

With Haiti pushing to equalize, Mexico was primed to hit on the break, and they did just that in the dying minutes, sealing the victory through a Santiago Giménez tap in at the back post.

The victory sees Mexico cruise into the knockout rounds as they look to win their first Gold Cup since 2019.
