Coburn is currently on loan with the Lions, having made the switch on deadline day of the summer market.

The forward went straight into the Millwall starting lineup following the move, scoring on his debut against Sheffield Wednesday on 31 August.

However, he had to be taken off just after half an hour in the team’s 1-0 loss to Luton Town last weekend due to injury.

According to Teesside Live, the 21-year-old is set to be absent for the next six to eight weeks after suffering a groin issue.

Carrick has confirmed that Coburn will remain with the London club for his recovery process instead of coming back to the Riverside.

The Middlesbrough manager admitted that it is a blow for the player, but that he expects him to bounce back after making an initially positive start to life at Millwall.

"He’s staying down there. We hope it will benefit him to stay in that environment," said Carrick, via Teesside Live.

"We are certainly here to support him from our side of things but I think that it is good for him to be there and immerse himself in it and hopefully he will be back pretty quick.

"He had a terrific start and hopefully he will get back on the pitch as quick as he can.

"Certainly for him, and for us, it’s a bit of a blow but the game throws up these types of things, ups and downs and little setbacks, but he’ll be alright and will deal with it.

"He’s got a good head on his shoulders and we’ll get him back on the pitch as quick as we can."

Coburn opened his Millwall account with the opening goal in a 3-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday in August, the team’s first league win of the campaign.

Millwall league position

Millwall currently sit 18th in the Championship table after five fixtures, with the win over the Owls being their only victory to date.

The injury to Coburn will come as a blow to Neil Harris’ side given the impact he’s already had in such a short space of time.

Three defeats from five have put Millwall in a difficult position to start the campaign.

Next up for the Lions is a trip to face QPR at Loftus Road in a 12.30pm kick-off.

Coburn recovery at Millwall makes sense for all parties

A groin injury that keeps Coburn on the sidelines for almost two months is a pretty big blow for Millwall and the player.

He’s had injury issues in the past, and this loan was supposed to be about getting regular game time and proving he can survive a whole campaign.

But having him recover in London makes sense, as bringing him back up to Teesside for six to eight weeks only for him to go back to Millwall wouldn’t seem worthwhile.

Millwall have their own accomplished medical staff that can help him get back up to speed as quickly as possible without him needing to go back to the Riverside.
