Despite being heavily linked with a January move to Milan, Liverpool center-forward Darwin Nunez will likely stay at Anfield. According to recent reports in England, the Italian colossi can’t afford the Uruguayan’s arrival despite desperately lacking an out-and-out striker.
Nunez joined Liverpool from Benfica in a mega-money £85 million deal in the summer of 2022. The Reds handed the 25-year-old a handsome £140,000-per-year contract, making him one of the club’s top earners. However, he has failed to repay that trust.
Indeed, during his two-and-a-half-year stint in the Premier League, Nunez has gained notoriety for his wasteful finishing. Despite re-establishing himself as a starter toward the end of Jurgen Klopp’s reign, he has tumbled down the pecking order under new Liverpool manager Arne Slot.
Therefore, Milan had hoped to sign him on loan this winter. Indeed, they planned to offer the Premier League pacesetters €5 million up front with a view to a permanent move worth another €45m next summer. However, the truth is – the Rossoneri cannot match Nunez’s substantial salary.
In addition to Milan, Barcelona and Fenerbahce have also considered offering Nunez an escape route from Liverpool. However, he’ll probably stay put. A lack of funds isn’t the only reason the San Siro outfit cannot lure the Artigas native to Serie A this season.
