Milan Ponder Significant Summer Defensive Shake-Up

Milan plot to massively change their defense after a challenging campaign. In the upper echelon of Serie A, only Lazio have conceded more. They had two separate coaches on their bench, but they haven’t turned the corner relative to the final Stefano Pioli years, when they were too lax to fight for lofty objectives. The acquisitions of Strahinja Pavlovic and Youssouf Fofana haven’t sufficed to address the problem.

According to Calciomercato, without the Champions League, the Rossoneri will need to sell to bankroll their signings. Malick Thiaw and Fikayo Tomori are surely expendable. Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich are eyeing the former, while West Ham and other Premier League sides are pursuing the long-time staple. Their price tag is roughly €25M.

Milan have shortlisted several players to replenish the position after one or two exits. Valencia’s Cristhian Mosquera has been on their radars for multiple windows. They’ll face competition especially from Atletico Madrid.

They are also keeping tabs on a few Serie A options, like Genoa’s Koni De Winter, Lazio’s Mario Gila, and Udinese’s Oumar Solet, who all have multiple suitors. They will inquire about Jhon Lucumi and Sam Beukema while discussing other matters with Bologna.

Our Take on the Milan Defense

The choice of the coach and his formation make all the difference. They should stick with the current one, or something close to it, as it’s serving Theo Hernandez and Rafael Leao well. They have underachieved in the back, as they have no slouches. Rather than making lateral moves or gambling on youngsters, they should sign a world-class player, which would fix a few things on its own and lift their other men.
