Millwall must ensure that Aidomo Emakhu doesn't depart the Den this summer as he could play a vital role for Neil Harris' side.

Millwall fans will be hopeful that they can build on their strong end to last season after the London club won their last five fixtures of the campaign.

This won't be simple in an ultra-competitive Championship, but they have made some great additions in the transfer window so far. Macauley Langstaff is somewhat of a statement signing given his impressive record at Notts County and Gateshead, and Lukas Jensen and Japhet Tanganga should both prove valuable additions.

On the departure side, it has been relatively quiet but Neil Harris and Millwall face a significant challenge in retaining their young talent Aidomo Emakhu.

The 20-year-old had a breakthrough campaign at The Den last season, making 21 league appearances for the Lions.

This summer, it looks as though Millwall's resolve may be tested but the South Londoners must hold firm and snub any incoming transfer advances for their future star.

PSV interested in Aidomo Emakhu

Having signed for Millwall from Shamrock Rovers in late 2022, it hasn't taken long for transfer interest to come from elsewhere for the youngster.

Earlier this month, Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven were said to have made an enquiry about the availability of Emakhu. But these hopes may have been struck back with the Lions detailing to PSV that he will not be allowed to leave for a cut-price fee.

This news comes after it was reported earlier in the window that "a stack of enquiries" had arrived from Championship, League One, and Scottish Premiership clubs about the possibility of a loan move.

Harris and the Millwall hierarchy must ensure that these loan approaches are treated with discontent as he could be a real star for them next season. In addition, with Emakhu only having a handful of first-team appearances, it seems unlikely that PSV will provide a suitable figure for someone so inexperienced, unless they rate him really, really highly.

This should see them approach these possible talks with an eye to the future and what the young Irish star could bring to them next year

Emakhu could be a star for Neil Harris

A major issue for Harris' side last season was the lack of goals they managed. Across the 46-game season, his side found the net a lowly 45 times and scored more than two goals on just three occasions.

The signing of Langstaff should help, but a more prominent role for Emakhu could see him flourish and become a star player at The Den next season.

In Harris' 4-4-2 system, there would likely be a spot on the right wing, with Duncan Watmore the only other recognised player in that position. Watmore has long struggled to turn his early promise into consistent seasons, and at the age of 30, still hasn't had a campaign where he has scored over ten Championship goals.

This should provide Emakhu with an opportunity, especially given his impressive pre-season performances, which have caught the attention of the Millwall boss.

If he continues this form for the rest of pre-season, then it is feasible that he will start the first game against Watford. Of course, this will be a step-up from the fitness-building tests prior to the campaign starting, but exposure at that level will only improve him as a player.

At 20-years-old, he is at a period in his career where he needs opportunities. Harris must ensure that he meets these requirements and retains the Irish youth international in a bid to see him become a star player for his side next year.
