Those who believe in the idea of jinxing might just be screaming at Paulo Fonseca for a comment he made a few weeks ago about injuries.
MilanNews recall how on November 29, during the press conference before the game against Empoli, Fonseca had little regard for superstition. He took pride in pointing out how this season the number of injuries for Milan was decidedly low both compared to last year and the general average.
“I know it’s important to play the same players in the defensive line, the problem is that we have so many games and when there are injuries we have to manage them,” he said.
“A management, at this moment, that is almost obligatory. We are happy, but we have almost no injuries. Don’t talk about this but it’s very very positive. And it’s also like this because we have this management.”
In the last 20 days he has lost Christian Pulisic, Loftus-Cheek, Yunus Musah and Noah Okafor through injury, in addition to the long-term absentees Ismael Bennacer, Alessandro Florenzi and Luka Jovic.
Fonseca is now preparing to face a potentially decisive match against Verona without seven players, and he is having to call up Milan Futuro players not just for the bench but to use in the starting line-up.
Lorenzo Torriani, Davide Bartesaghi and Francesco Camarda have been regulars on the bench, while on Sunday against Genoa he decided to start Alejandro Jimenez and Mattia Liberali. Considering the emergency that they are about to face, Silvano Vos could be added to the list for Friday.
