Liverpool take another massive step closer to a second Premier League title in six seasons after beating Southampton 3-1 at Anfield on Saturday afternoon.
The Reds were made to work hard, but they produced a superb second-half performance to go sixteen points clear at the top, although Arsenal have played two games less.
Mohamed Salah scored twice from the spot, and Darwin Nunez added another as Liverpool went 25 games unbeaten in the Premier League.
The Reds were nowhere near their best following an energy-draining late win at Paris St-Germain on Wednesday, but they have managed to pick up all three points. The result is all that matters.
The defeat leaves Southampton in danger of the lowest Premier League points total ever.
Southampton made a dream start when Will Smallbone took advantage of a huge mix-up between Virgil van Dijk and Alisson to score from a tight angle.
Arne Slot, who was watching the game from the stands due to suspension, was clearly frustrated with his team’s approach, and made three changes at the break.
After the game, Salah revealed the mood in the dressing room and what Slot told the players at the break.
He said: “It was a bit of frustration. His head was going for us. We were sloppy and slow in the first half. I don’t think we played good today. If you want to win the Champions League or Premier League you have to win these games like that.”
Everyone expected Liverpool to pick up a comfortable win, but they were pretty flat in the first half. They showed more intensity in the second half, with the likes of Harvey Elliott and Alexis MacAllister making big impact.
Meanwhile, Salah is chasing numbers at the moment. He has been sensational all season and has now scored his 27th goal in the Premier League. With that, he has joined Sergio Aguero with 184 Premier League goals, a joint fifth in the Premier League’s all-time top scorer list.
