Ignacio Piatti opened the scoring before Alejandro Silva sealed the win for Montreal.
Sporting Kansas City came into Saturday night on a seven-match unbeaten run. SKC had conceded just twice in their previous five MLS matches on the road before heading up to Montreal.
The visitors had the better run of play early on but did not capitalize on their possession advantage.
Neither Gerso Fernandes nor Yohan Croziet won the ball for Sporting at the top of the area before Piatti latched onto the loose ball.
The Argentine forwardâs ninth goal of the MLS season put the Impact ahead at home.
Referee Ted Unkel whistled Sporting KC centre-back Ike Opara for a foul on Daniel Lovitz in the aftermath of a free kick floated into the box. Opara was trying to limit his contact with Lovitz but still clipped the Montreal left-backâs foot and conceded the penalty.
Silva stepped up and coolly dispatched the spot-kick in the 70th minute for his first goal with Montreal.
The Impact won 2-0 at home despite defending compactly and giving up possession while Sporting was uncharacteristically wasteful on the road.
