Leicester City have been charged by the Premier League for breaching PSR rules in the 2023/24 season.
Leicester City have been charged by the Premier League for breaching PSR for the 2023/24 season, which could bring a points deduction ahead of their Championship return.
The Foxes have been embroiled in off-field issues for some time now, and there were fears they would be deducted points during the current campaign.
As it transpired, Leicester won the case against the Premier League on those charges, which related to the 2022/23 season, although they have still been relegated.
Yet, the financial concerns aren’t going away, as Telegraph reporter John Percy revealed that the Premier League have taken new action against the Midlands outfit.
“New - the Premier League has charged Leicester with an alleged breach of PSR for the 23/24 season (when the club was in the Championship). Leicester have been referred to an independent commission. Another legal battle is looming, four weeks after Leicester’s relegation.”
Leicester managed to beat the previous charge as they exploited a loophole that meant the Premier League couldn’t charge them following their relegation because they were a Championship club.
However, the Premier League have rectified that, which is why they are now able to charge the club relating to the 2023/24 season, even though the Foxes were in the second tier.
This is more bad news for Leicester, even if it was always on the cards.
The PSR charge was hanging over the club last summer, and it will have impacted them in terms of recruitment and who they were able to appoint as a manager.
So, to have more uncertainty is far from ideal, particularly as there are doubts over Ruud van Nistelrooy’s future, whilst a player overhaul may be needed as they prepare for life in the Championship.
Ultimately, the club has made mistakes in the past, and they could pay for them now, so questions need to be asked as to how they have breached the rules.
Obviously, a points deduction would be a real problem next season, when promotion will be the aim, and if they are hit with a punishment, the club would like to know as soon as possible.
There’s no timeframe for this though, so we will wait to see how it all plays out, and that will no doubt frustrate Leicester fans, who will be bored with all the PSR talk that has dominated the club in the past year or so.
